Strategy #12: Comparing surface and deep learning.

As students move through the conceptual inquiry cycle, be sure to remind them of the process and goal of iterative learning. Consider showing them the visual in Figure 3.9, and ask them to compare the two swimmers. What are the implications? Students should come up with ideas such as these: The deeper the diver goes, the more interesting the ocean becomes. Or if we only stay at the surface, learning can be quite boring. Each new context students study should take them deeper, helping their generalizations become more interesting, insightful, and well supported.
